E J Rozek book on Allied diplomacy as illus in Poland revd. Satellite in the Making; ALLIED WARTIME DIPLOMACY: A Pattern in Poland. By Edward J. Rozek. pp. Science Diplomacy: Antarctica, Science and the Governance of International Spaces. (With Foreword by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco). Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press, Washington, DC. p.

As the subtitle suggests, this book is concerned with the diplomacy relating to Poland, its frontiers, and the composition of a Polish government in the years of the Second World War and immediately thereafter. Although a good deal of the story is familiar the author has enjoyed access to Stanislaw Mikolajczyk's files, which provide valuable new information on the policy of the Western Powers. The last three books had ‘peace’ in the title – but war is actually the crucial component of the understanding of the role of diplomacy in the world. This is the one book I’ve chosen that is actually a visionary work. Rupert Smith was a professional soldier who became Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in NATO.

The study of diplomacy - in many respects the 'engine room' of international relations - has been marked by a revitalisation in recent years. This three-volume collection is the first to bring together the seminal writings in the field to provide a unique reference work on this essential institution for the conduct of international affairs. The book also provides a wealth of information on the role played by members of the Combined Chiefs of Staff in the spheres of economic mobilization and wartime diplomacy. Most of all, what Allied Master Strategists does is to give the Combined Chiefs of Staff what they have long deserved—a book of their own; a book that is not weighted.
